It's a historical piece with three interesting episodes woven into the book. First, the Creek Indian War within Alabama, which it details in a fine fashion. Second is the basic introduction to General Jackson and the various problems he ran into.....as he carried out the war from the US side. And third, the Red Eagle story.....which I admit the guy deserves a movie because of the various episodes that he gets himself into. If you have no interest in history or the Creek Indian story....skip the book. The only thing I'd say that the book lacks is some connection on each page to a time/date. It would be helpful to remind people what is occurring and how it relates to other events. A book that you can easily read in a week....written in an excellent fashion. I probably wouldn't endorse it for a high school class, but it'd be excellent material to pull quotes from talk about the life and times of people in this period.Product details

If you live in Alabama you will recognize lots of place names, the name of which come from the people and battles descried here. Lots of real Alabama history. There is much more information about Adrew Jackson than about William Weatherford, however Jackson's place in history is more completely documented in the literature. The author had to necessarily rely on previous published information. The kindle version is free, but lacks the illustrations.
Enjoyable & educational.
Interesting to read an account written in the 1800s and it gives a through job of covering the battles and motives for the war. However the flowery language of the day and the amount of personal comments by the author tends to take away from the flow of the book. I would have liked to have more info on other Indian leaders under Red Eagle as well as more about the Creeks involvement with the Spanish and the British but as pointed out in the book history is written by the victors and so perhaps not much is known (or was known at the time the book was written ) about that. Worth reading , as it is about a part of the War of 1812 that is not usually mentioned.
The Author starts by explaining how little is known about Red Eagle (or William Weatherford). Given that, I wonder why he starts the title with his name. The book has more information about Jackson and the other U.S. soldiers than about Red Eagle. But it does include detailed information about the battles (from the white man's point of view) and is easy reading, not in the style of other 19th Century books I have tried.
A great little book for history loving people on the early Creek War's in Alabama. In reality however, there is actually more written in this book about Andrew Jackson and his armies than Red Eagle, aka William Weatherford. Unfortunately, there is simply not a treasure trove of historical documents available to draw upon for a grand picture of Weatherford. There is adequate information on Weatherford that exceeds most lessons taught in high school history classes to make it worth the readers while.
This is a great book for anyone interested in Andrew Jackson, Alabama history or just a good read. I started it about 100 p.m., took a short break for dinner and finished it before 900. It is hard to put down. The book reads like a novel, and that in fact is what it may be. I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on its historic accuracy, but it should be noted that that some of the details, paricularly about Red Eagle, are at variance with accounts of 20th Century historians.
The author juxtaposes Red Eagle, said to be the great leader of the Creek Nation, with Old Hickory. It is difficult to ascertain which of the two men he has the most respect for.
If the book is to be taken as a history book, it has a weakness in that it lacks an index. It does contain many quotes, perhaps too many. A reader has to wonder if many of the author's assertions are unattributed quotes.
Maybe five stars are too many. But it was difintely, worth what it cost through and the time taken in reading it.
It was an exhaustive account of the Creek Indian Wars......probably more than I wanted to read for now. But I was able to skim through the important parts and learned what I was looking for. Yes. Worth the $$. If you have more time.....read it all!
